It is the earliest known residence on Lebanon Hill, an area of early suburban growth. It is also tied to Edgar Harvey Hennis, a prominent local horse trader and Chrysler automobile dealer.","narrative":"Built in 1909 at 1056 North Main Street in Mount Airy, this one-and-one-half story brick veneer house combines late Victorian and Colonial Revival features. It has multiple shingled gables, a Palladian window, round-arch windows, three-sided projecting bays, a wrap-around porch, and granite used for the foundation, lintels, sills, porch plinths and retaining wall. Inside, a center hall plan retains pine wainscot, original hardware and five period mantelpieces. Edgar Harvey Hennis, a businessman who moved from drugstore owner to horse trader and livery operator and then to Chrysler dealer, had the house built for about $3,500. At the time it was the only house on Lebanon Hill, the former site of the town's first Methodist church, and neighboring homes followed through the 1910s and early 1930s. The Hennis family lived there for seventy-four years with few changes. A later owner added an attic staircase and updated the kitchen and baths while preserving original fabric. The architect is unknown.","period_of_significance":"1900-; specific date 1909","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Late Victorian and Colonial Revival influences","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"Occupied private residence in excellent condition; preserved and renovated by the later owner, with a new attic staircase and updated kitchen and baths.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:49.373374-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/28/7223/47722328/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/86000318.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86000318/43575fd00b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86000318/43575fd00b-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Edgar_Harvey_Hennis_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Edgar_Harvey_Hennis_House.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"100005978","name":"Lebanon Hill Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/north-carolina/lebanon-hill-historic-district-100005978/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47722328","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edgar_Harvey_Hennis_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19902353"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/surry-county/hennis-edgar-harvey-house-86000318/"}
