It sits on a one-acre lot with a small cemetery.","why_significant":"The church is tied to western North Carolina's nineteenth-century role as a summer retreat for wealthy, largely Episcopalian South Carolina families, notably the General Wade Hampton family, who funded the buildings and donated the bell. It is also a well-crafted example of Gothic Revival church architecture.","narrative":"Set on a shady knoll among native rhododendron and flame azaleas near Cashiers, this white weatherboarded Gothic Revival church was dedicated in 1895. It replaced an earlier building destroyed by fire in 1892. The rectangular nave has a steeply pitched roof, pointed arch windows, lancet windows with rondels at each end, and a three-sided chancel. Inside are oak pews, massive pegged oak trusses, bead board walls and stained glass. A freestanding bell tower holds a bell cast in Baltimore in 1882. The church grew out of a summer colony of South Carolinians, most notably the family of General Wade Hampton, who helped pay for both buildings and donated the bell. After standing idle in the early twentieth century, it was restored in the 1920s and later added year-round services. A one-room vestry and office wing was built in 1985, and a small cemetery lies behind the church, with graves dating from 1886 and 1888.","period_of_significance":"1895","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Gothic Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Occupied and in use as a church, in excellent condition and meticulously maintained; a vestry and office wing was added in 1985.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:49.152879-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/50/7209/47720950/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/86000317.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86000317/b2848ce495-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86000317/b2848ce495-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"RichardKenni","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Church_Of_The_Good_Shepherd_Cashiers.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">RichardKenni</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Church_Of_The_Good_Shepherd_Cashiers.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47720950","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Church_of_the_Good_Shepherd_(Cashiers,_North_Carolina)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5117859"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/jackson-county/church-of-the-good-shepherd-86000317/"}
