It retains a high degree of architectural integrity, with only minor exterior changes. It is also associated with Wesley Whipple Stone, Arcata's first banker.","narrative":"Built in 1888 at 902 14th Street in Arcata, this two-and-a-half-story wood house is a textbook example of Queen Anne design. It has a corner tower, multiple rooflines, pedimented gables, bay windows, a Palladian window, and varied shingle and shiplap siding. Contractor Theodore Dean built it for $6,500 for Wesley Whipple Stone, who came to Arcata in 1886 and opened the Bank of Arcata, the town's first bank. Stone later served as the bank's president. The house belongs to a group of elaborate buildings erected between 1884 and 1888 during a lumber-industry boom. It sits in what the nomination calls Arcata's most important architectural district, and a near mirror-image house stands at the far corner of the block. Exterior changes are limited to brick front steps, a partly glassed-in porch, and some added windows. The interior retains its redwood woodwork, stained glass, fireplaces, and original room arrangement.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Theodore Dean","architectural_style":"Queen Anne","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied and in good condition; used as a private residence and as a bed and breakfast inn, with minor alterations.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:27.74328-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/86000267.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86000267/d1751e0e32-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86000267/d1751e0e32-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 2.0","author":"Marina","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Arcata_California_Houses.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Marina</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Arcata_California_Houses.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123858798","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q133266840"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/humboldt-county/stone-house-86000267/"}
