It is also presented as an intact, well-preserved example of a vernacular I-house with Greek Revival details, complete with outbuildings.","narrative":"Built in 1846 by Joseph Kirkwood, this two-story brick house on Bennett Street in Bridgeport, Ohio, is a vernacular I-house with Greek Revival detailing. A large ell was added in 1853. The five-bay symmetrical facade has a recessed central entrance with sidelights and a transom, a wooden cornice with partial gable returns, stone lintels and lug sills, and venetian shutters. Inside, Greek Revival fireplaces, key-motif door and window trim, and a mahogany circular handrail survive. Two brick dependencies from the same period, including a combined smokehouse and servants' quarters, stand to the south. Joseph was the son of Robert Kirkwood, a Revolutionary War veteran who became one of the earliest settlers in the area, and he platted the village of Kirkwood in 1834. The house is the only remaining structure tied to the family. It was recognized for this local association and as a well-preserved, little-altered example of mid-nineteenth-century brick architecture.","period_of_significance":"1846 (specific date given; the 1800-1899 period is checked)","architect_builder":"Builder/architect unknown; built by Joseph Kirkwood","architectural_style":"Vernacular I-house with Greek Revival details","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Occupied and in use as housing for mentally retarded residents; integrity described as very good, with a ca. 1930 second-floor frame addition and replaced window sash.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:14.317661-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/86000239.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86000239/81c9b4e539-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86000239/81c9b4e539-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"Bwsmith84 at en.wikipedia","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Joseph_kirkwood_house.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Bwsmith84 at en.wikipedia</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Joseph_kirkwood_house.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71986811","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Kirkwood_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6284622"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/belmont-county/kirkwood-joseph-house-86000239/"}
