Builder and architect are unknown.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is significant under Criterion C as the only known three-bay stone Pre-Classical I house in the Olentangy River Valley, and one of about 25 surviving stone structures there. It retains a high degree of integrity compared with other stone buildings in the area, including original doors, hardware, mantels, built-in cabinets and flooring.","narrative":"High House is a two-story stone farmhouse on Panhandle Road near Delaware, Ohio, built about 1850 for Mary High, a widow from Pennsylvania who had moved to Troy Township with her family in 1832. Its walls are coursed rubble limestone, and the plan is a single room deep and two rooms wide, with three bays, side gable ends and interior end chimneys. A frame kitchen ell was added at the rear and later altered. Inside, original doors, hardware, mantels, built-in cabinets and flooring survive. The house was listed because it is the only known three-bay stone Pre-Classical I house in the Olentangy River Valley, where only about 25 stone structures remain. Locally quarried Delaware limestone saw limited use there in the later nineteenth century, mostly for Pennsylvania immigrants. Compared with similar stone buildings nearby, the house is less altered or deteriorated. The nominated area covers only the house, since the other outbuildings are not from its period.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899 (specific date c. 1850)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Vernacular Pre-Classical I house; Greek Revival style doorway added 1967","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Occupied private residence; stone portion repointed in 1979.
