The house is notable for its Italianate styling, Eastlake porch and elaborate interior detail. It was also the home of Benton Garinger, a prosperous farmer who bred imported Aberdeen-Angus cattle in the county's leading industry, agriculture.","narrative":"Woodlawn Farm is a small farm complex on State Route 41, about a mile northwest of Washington Court House, Ohio. Built in 1878, the two-and-a-half-story brick house shows an inventive use of Italianate style, with a steep truncated slate roof, a widow's walk, bracketed cornices, carved wooden window pediments and an Eastlake porch. Inside are original fireplaces, shutters, ornamental plaster and a different wood in each room, all taken from the surrounding farmland. A springhouse, a brick outhouse and a frame shed survive with the house beside Paint Creek. Benton Garinger and his wife Melissa built it on land first bought by his father, an early settler. Benton imported purebred Aberdeen-Angus cattle from Scotland and became a noted breeder, also raising hogs and grain. The property was listed for its architecture, its intact condition, and its link to the cattle and corn economy that dominated Fayette County in the nineteenth century. The nominated area covers only the house and its immediate outbuildings.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate, with an Eastlake style porch","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"The house is vacant and undergoing restoration. The nomination reports very high integrity, though vandals broke the colored glass windows in the outhouse.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:14.258081-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/86000237.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86000237/66e50cbb2c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86000237/66e50cbb2c-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Woodlawn_Farmhouse_near_WCH.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Woodlawn_Farmhouse_near_WCH.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71988256","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q137803513"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/fayette-county/woodlawn-farm-86000237/"}
