It is the town's last intact 19th-century school building and reflects Ayer's late 19th-century prosperity as a railroad center. It is listed under Criterion C at the local level.","narrative":"Pleasant Street School is a large, two-story frame schoolhouse in the residential neighborhood north of Ayer's main commercial district. It was designed in two parts: the south half went up in 1893 and the north half followed in 1906, when stairtowers were added at both ends. Colonial Revival details include a hipped roof with a central deck, seven gabled dormers, dentilled cornices, banded windows and wooden torch reliefs in the facade pediments. The land was donated by local doctor John A. Park, and the building housed grade and high school classes until a separate high school opened in 1931. Elementary classes continued until 1981. Ayer grew after railroads converged there from 1845, and the school reflects that prosperity. It was the town's fourth school, with a modern plan, large classrooms and up-to-date heating and ventilation. It is considered the town's last intact 19th-century school building. The architect is unknown. Alterations in 1953-1954 added an entrance porch and basement cafeteria space.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899, 1900- (specific dates 1893, 1906)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Colonial Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Vacant since 1981 when the school closed, and suffering from lack of maintenance; owned by the Town of Ayer.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:57.44638-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/59/7958/63795859/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/86000094.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86000094/eabd2e7b9d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86000094/eabd2e7b9d-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Pleasant_Street_School,_Ayer_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Pleasant_Street_School,_Ayer_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63795859","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pleasant_Street_School_(Ayer,_Massachusetts)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7203977"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/pleasant-street-school-86000094/"}
