It was one of the city's grandest houses. The 1910 alterations were done so skillfully that they form a unified composition and have gained significance in their own right.","narrative":"Built in the early 1890s by Goodwin, one of East Liverpool's pottery manufacturers, this brick Colonial Revival house at 422 Broadway originally had a symmetrical facade, a rounded corner tower with a conical roof, and a front porch with paired Ionic columns. Homer Knowles, a nephew associated with the Knowles, Taylor, Knowles Pottery, later lived there. The house is nearly identical in original design to another Goodwin property at 5th and Jackson. In 1910 the Masonic Lodge bought it and enlarged it at front and rear, extending the facade and enclosing the porch. Careful matching of the roof pitch, dormers and window trim made the changes hard to detect. It has served as the Masonic Temple ever since. It is recognized for its link to the city's pottery industry and its long social role, and it remains one of the city's grandest houses despite the alterations.","period_of_significance":"1890's","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Colonial Revival influence","criteria":["A","B"],"status_note":"Used as a Masonic lodge; exterior condition fair; second-floor front windows altered with glass block but otherwise high integrity.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:14.290523-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/85003515.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85003515/6db7ad0ce1-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85003515/6db7ad0ce1-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Godwin-Knowles_House,_East_Liverpool.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Godwin-Knowles_House,_East_Liverpool.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"01000591","name":"East Liverpool Downtown Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/ohio/east-liverpool-downtown-historic-district-01000591/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71984574","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godwin%E2%80%93Knowles_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5576955"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/columbiana-county/godwin-knowles-house-85003515/"}
