It is historically important as part of the William B. Sherman dairy farm and as one of very few surviving unaltered farmhouses in North Adams.","narrative":"This farmhouse at 1072 State Road in North Adams was built between about 1820 and 1830 in the Greek Revival style. It is five bays wide, with Doric corner pilasters, full pediments in each gable end and original six-over-six sash. Around 1870 to 1875 a large Italianate-style veranda was added, with four posts linked by broad arches and unusual filigree in the spandrels. William B. Sherman, born in Rhode Island in 1759, bought the farmland in 1813 and developed it as a dairy and sheep farm with his son Eber, who built a separate Greek Revival house nearby. The land was then part of Williamstown and joined North Adams in 1900. After Sherman died in 1846, the farm passed through several owners, and the Phelps family worked it into the twentieth century. Since World War II the surrounding land has been sold for housing, commercial use and the airport. The house is valued as one of the few surviving unaltered farmhouses in the city.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Present use is residence; the house now sits on a lot of less than one acre after surrounding farmland was sold off.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:57.406289-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/34/7892/63789234/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/85003419.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85003419/45deee7c9e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85003419/45deee7c9e-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:William_B._Sherman_Farm,_North_Adams_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:William_B._Sherman_Farm,_North_Adams_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63789234","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_B._Sherman_Farm","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14716036"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/berkshire-county/sherman-william-b-farm-85003419/"}
