It is found eligible under Criteria A, B and C.","narrative":"Norad Mill is a brick woolen mill at 60 Roberts Drive in North Adams, on the north bank of the Hoosac River. The main mill, wheelhouse and wing date from 1863 and feature a high-peaked roof and ornate corbelled brickwork on the cornices. Later additions between 1895 and 1904 extended the west end and south wing, some copying the load-bearing walls and low roof of the original, others using curtain-wall construction. The mill was built by the North Adams Woolen Company, organized in 1863 and financed mainly by Sanford Blackinton, the town's wealthiest manufacturer. By the mid 1890s it produced fancy cassimeres worth half a million dollars a year and employed 225 workers, making it larger than 90 percent of American woolen mills. Woolen production continued until shortly after World War II. Printing and storage businesses later occupied the buildings. It is considered the oldest and most intact mill complex in North Adams, retaining its design, materials and setting.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect unknown; built by the North Adams Woolen Company (president Sanford Blackinton)","architectural_style":"Italianate industrial","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"Present use is industrial/commercial; the form describes past use by a printing company and a sales and storage business.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:56.442848-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/75/7892/63789275/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/85003417.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85003417/442139309f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85003417/442139309f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Beyond My Ken","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Norad_Mill_60_Roberts_Drive_North_Adams_from_west.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Beyond My Ken</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Norad_Mill_60_Roberts_Drive_North_Adams_from_west.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63789275","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norad_Mill","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7050183"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/berkshire-county/norad-mill-85003417/"}
