It was built for an Arnold Print Works employee and reflects the town's late 19th century building boom and prosperity. It meets Criteria A and C.","narrative":"Set back about fifteen feet from the street in a hilly, thickly settled part of northeastern North Adams, this clapboard house at 60 Brooklyn Street dates to about 1875. It was built for W. W. Armstrong, an employee of Arnold Print Works, and its location north of the Hoosac River made for a convenient trip to the factory on the opposite bank. The house is a well-preserved local version of the Italianate style, with a square plan, low hipped roof on brackets, three-bay facade, side-hall plan, bracketed portico and a polygonal bracketed bay. A rear ell with a bracketed porch and an attached barn were built at the same time as the main block. Mid-20th century porch columns and railing replaced the originals but do little to harm its integrity. The house reflects the prosperity and intense building activity of North Adams in the late 19th century, and it was listed for that association and for its architecture.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Present use is residence; front porch columns and railing were replaced in the mid 20th century, though the building retains integrity.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:57.930803-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/47/7892/63789247/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/85003394.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85003394/c1ce7f9ee0-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85003394/c1ce7f9ee0-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Armstrong_House,_North_Adams_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Armstrong_House,_North_Adams_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63789247","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armstrong_House_(North_Adams,_Massachusetts)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4793948"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/berkshire-county/armstrong-house-85003394/"}
