It retains most of its late 19th century buildings with few exterior alterations, and it is listed under Criteria A and C.","narrative":"Arnold Print Works is a 24-acre brick mill complex on the peninsula where the north and south branches of the Hoosac River meet in North Adams. Construction began in 1872, right after a fire destroyed the earlier plant, with the four-story main mill, and additions continued until about 1903. Most of the 26 surviving buildings are typical late 19th century industrial structures with load-bearing brick walls, segmental-arched windows and corbelled cornices. Separate buildings housed dyeing, drying, bleaching, finishing, color mixing, packing and storage, and covered bridges link the two sides of the river. The firm, founded in 1861 by Harvey Arnold and his brothers, was the city's largest industry from the Civil War into the early 20th century. Its growth and setbacks mirrored the local economy until southern competition and the 1920s shutdowns ended its run. Sprague Electric Company acquired the plant, which remains in industrial use.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate Industrial","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Present use is light industry; the complex serves as the main manufacturing plant of Sprague Electric Company.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:56.503258-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/67/7892/63789267/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/85003379.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85003379/66d9927626-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85003379/66d9927626-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Beyond My Ken","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Arnold_Print_Works_(MASS_MoCA)_1.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Beyond My Ken</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Arnold_Print_Works_(MASS_MoCA)_1.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63789267","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q108130163"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/berkshire-county/arnold-print-works-85003379/"}
