It served as the training stable of the Palo Alto Stock Farm.","why_significant":"It is the most significant surviving building from the Palo Alto Stock Farm, founded by Leland Stanford, where he studied horse anatomy and locomotion and tested his breeding and training theories. The form describes it as an excellent example of Victorian-era barn architecture applied to a utilitarian structure. Nineteen world harness-racing records were set by 13 champions bred and trained in or near the barn.","narrative":"Built between 1878 and 1880 on what is now the Stanford University campus, the Red Barn was the training stable of the Palo Alto Stock Farm, established by railroad magnate and former California governor Leland Stanford. The two-story redwood and Douglas fir building has red shiplap siding, white trim, a clerestory roof, carved finials and a cupola topped with a bronze weathervane. Its hay chutes double as ventilation shafts. At the farm, Stanford crossbred trotters with thoroughbreds and developed a training method that started colts young and drove them at full speed over short distances. Thirteen champions bred and trained there set nineteen world harness records. At its height the farm employed 150 workers and boarded 600 horses. The designer and builder are unknown. A restoration in 1983 and 1984 preserved roughly 60 to 70 percent of the original materials, and the barn still works as a stable and riding center. It is the only building from the farm's training complex still standing.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899 (specific dates between 1878 and 1880)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Stick-Eastlake","criteria":[],"status_note":"Restored between September 1983 and April 1984; in continual use as an equestrian center and stable, in excellent condition.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:27.771465-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/85003325.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85003325/c4a769c4cc-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85003325/c4a769c4cc-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Sanfranman59","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Electioneer_statue_and_Palo_Alto_Stock_Farm_horse_barn,_Fremont_Rd.,_Palo_Alto,_CA_6-3-2012_3-06-34_PM.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Sanfranman59</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Electioneer_statue_and_Palo_Alto_Stock_Farm_horse_barn,_Fremont_Rd.,_Palo_Alto,_CA_6-3-2012_3-06-34_PM.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123861758","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palo_Alto_Stock_Farm_Horse_Barn","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q55264619"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/santa-clara-county/palo-alto-stock-farm-horse-barn-85003325/"}
