It is also a unique example of a mansard-style house with Stick Style detailing, unlike any other house nearby.","narrative":"Built in 1881 at 203 Aspinwall Avenue in Brookline, this two-story house combines a mansard roof with Stick Style detailing. A cupola tops the roof, and the corners are clipped or chamfered, with the front door placed to emphasize them. Brackets, bargeboards and pendants show the Stick Style influence. Neighboring houses are mostly larger and date from the 1880s and 1890s, but none resembles this one. It was built for Winand Toussaint, a Belgian-born furniture manufacturer who came to the United States in 1854 and moved to Brookline in 1873. Directories of the 1890s list him as an architect, and his obituary says he practised from an office in his home, so he probably designed the house himself. A mahogany statue stand bearing his signature is held by the Museum of Fine Arts. The house is valued both as the home of this designer and as an unusual local building type. It remains a residence on a small lot.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Probably Winand Toussaint","architectural_style":"Mansard with some Stick Style elements","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Present use is residential; a small garage dates from 1927 and the house had a general overhauling in 1926.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:56.495373-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/94/7924/63792494/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/85003319.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85003319/f30288b6f9-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85003319/f30288b6f9-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BrooklineMA_WinandToussaintHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BrooklineMA_WinandToussaintHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792494","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winand_Toussaint_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8023678"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/norfolk-county/toussaint-winand-house-85003319/"}
