It also represents Brookline's late 19th century country estate development. Surrounding outbuildings took their stylistic cues from the main house.","narrative":"Roughwood is a large Shingle Style country house at 400 Heath Street in Brookline, built in 1891 and designed by the architectural firm Andrews, Jaques and Rantoul. It was built as the country estate of William and Josephine Cox, a wholesale boot and shoe dealer and his wife. The hip-roofed, symmetrical house has two large turreted bays flanking a central entrance, stone and banded shingle surfaces, and massive panel brick chimneys. The same firm designed most of the outbuildings, including a cowbarn, lodge, gate houses and carriage house. In 1904 the property was sold to banker Ernest Dane, who expanded the estate to 120 acres and added a music room wing in 1909. Pine Manor Junior College acquired the estate in 1961. Later additions were designed to conform to the original style, and open spaces and the rural character of the grounds remain largely intact. The house is significant for its architecture and as an example of Brookline's late 19th century country estates.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Andrews, Jaques, and Rantoul; later additions by Brainard and Leeds (1909 attached houses) and Shepley, Bulfinch, Richardson, and Abbott (carriage house addition)","architectural_style":"Shingle","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Now used as the administration building of Pine Manor College, with former estate outbuildings adapted for college use.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:57.722904-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/28/7926/63792628/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/85003309.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85003309/214bab9527-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85003309/214bab9527-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BrooklineMA_Roughwood_PineManorCollege.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BrooklineMA_Roughwood_PineManorCollege.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792628","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roughwood_(Brookline,_Massachusetts)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7370918"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/norfolk-county/roughwood-85003309/"}
