Cabot, on an 11-acre lot.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it meets criterion C as one of the few remaining 19th-century country estates on Heath Street whose original acreage has stayed undeveloped. It is also described as a fine example of the Jacobethan style as used in late 19th-century country houses.","narrative":"Set on about eleven acres along Heath Street in Brookline, this brick country house was built in 1893 for Walter Channing Cabot, who had it designed by the Boston firm Andrews, Jaques & Rantoul. Cabot gave it to his daughter Ruth and her husband, the attorney and philanthropist Robert Treat Paine II. The asymmetrical front facade has two Flemish gables, a two-story rounded bay, limestone sills and lintels, and applied terra cotta egg and dart molding at the entrance. Though not built in one defined style, it shows Jacobethan influence. Additions came in 1903 and 1917, and greenhouses and garages remain among the outbuildings. The house was listed because it is one of the few 19th-century country estates on Heath Street whose original acreage has stayed undeveloped, and because it is a fine example of the Jacobethan manner in late 19th-century country houses. Nearby estates of the Lyman, Coolidge and Cox families have largely disappeared or changed use.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Andrews, Jaques & Rantoul (architects); Thomas Quimby assisted Cabot in laying out the property","architectural_style":"Flemish influence in gables; some Jacobethan influence","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Present use is residential; the estate is still privately owned.
