Orrock. It was moved forward on its lot in 1984.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is a rare example of a late, elaborate Mansard-style cottage, meeting criterion C. Its mansard-with-hip roof, animated facade, varied textures and panels anticipate the Queen Anne style. Its Italianate-derived brackets are typical of vernacular Mansard houses on the street.","narrative":"Built in 1871, this two-story cottage at 68 Winchester Street in Brookline was the home of Reverend John M. Orrock, editor of the Advent Herald, a weekly religious newspaper published in Boston by the American Millennial Association. He lived here for more than thirty years. The house is much smaller than the other Mansard-style homes on the street, yet its features look ahead to later houses of the type: a tall mansard roof with a near-hip roof above it, three round-headed windows in each bay, arched dormers with pilasters, paired brackets under the cornice, a paneled frieze board, two-story bays and a side-hall entrance. Bevel siding and panels add varied textures that point toward the Queen Anne style, while the brackets are holdovers from the Italianate. It was judged a rare example of a late, elaborate Mansard cottage. In 1984 the building was moved forward on its lot to make room for a seven-story apartment block behind it.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mansard","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Used as a residence; moved forward on its lot in 1984, when a seven-story apartment block (non-contributing) was built at the rear of the lot.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:56.172577-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/76/7924/63792476/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/85003304.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85003304/15fc38bd3f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85003304/15fc38bd3f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Asafspades","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Rev._John_Orrock_House.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Asafspades</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Rev._John_Orrock_House.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792476","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rev._John_Orrock_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7317681"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/norfolk-county/orrock-rev-john-house-85003304/"}
