It is an unusual combination of Greek Revival and Italianate styles with a mansard roof. It was built by Isaac Rich, an incorporator and benefactor of the Boston Theological Seminary (now Boston University).","narrative":"Set on Linden Street in Brookline, this clapboard house combines Greek Revival and Italianate styling beneath a high, curved slate mansard roof. Details include pedimented dormers, modillions under wide eaves, a Greek key motif on the frieze, and a band of three narrow second-floor windows topped by arches. Isaac Rich, a Wellfleet-born shipping and fish-dealing merchant, built it between 1844 and 1855 on land in the Linden Place subdivision laid out in 1843 by Thomas Aspinwall Davis. Rich later left much of his fortune to Boston University, then the Boston Theological Seminary, where he served as incorporator and trustee. By 1871 the house belonged to Edward E. Floyd, a Boston dry goods merchant, who moved it between 1884 and 1888 to make way for commercial development along Harvard Street. The mansard roof was probably added in the late 1860s. Renovations in 1980 restored the porch, added a third floor to the rear ell and a triple front dormer. It remains one of the few survivors of the subdivision.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect not available; built for Isaac Rich","architectural_style":"Greek Revival/Italianate with mansard roof","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"Present use is residential; porch restored and third floor added to the ell in 1980.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:56.651377-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/42/7926/63792642/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/85003293.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85003293/c7f0a99696-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85003293/c7f0a99696-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BrooklineMA_HouseAt9LindenStreet.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BrooklineMA_HouseAt9LindenStreet.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792642","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_at_9_Linden_Street","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5914514"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/norfolk-county/house-at-9-linden-street-85003293/"}
