It is unusual in a neighborhood of mostly 20th-century Georgian and Tudor Revival homes. Only one other Greek Revival house in the area is noted as surviving, and that one was also moved.","narrative":"This clapboard house at 83 Penniman Place in Brookline is a plain but sturdy Greek Revival dwelling, built probably between 1830 and 1837 for Daniel Sanderson, a town officeholder and Baptist deacon. It sits with its gable end to the street and has an enclosed pediment, raking cornice, pilaster corner boards, a wide entablature with returns, and a side-hall entrance with pilasters and sidelights. A shallow side porch with Doric columns and tall first-floor windows completes the design. In 1912, when the Phillips estate was being subdivided, the house was moved from the intersection of the Dean Road extension and Chestnut Hill Avenue to its present site beside Eliot Playground. The same year a small rear extension was added, continuing the original ell. Apart from a one-story bay on the north side, it appears much as built. It was listed as an early and rare local example of Greek Revival design in a neighborhood of mostly 20th-century Georgian and Tudor Revival houses.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Daniel Sanderson (original owner); architect information not available","architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still a single-family dwelling; moved in 1912 and altered that year with a rear extension.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:56.085784-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/27/7924/63792427/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/85003292.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85003292/8d964f5a7b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85003292/8d964f5a7b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Physicistjedi","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:House_at_83_Penniman_Place.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Physicistjedi</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:House_at_83_Penniman_Place.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792427","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_at_83_Penniman_Place","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5914478"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/norfolk-county/house-at-83-penniman-place-85003292/"}
