Faxon. It is a clapboard residence on a large lot with a low stone wall along the front.","why_significant":"The house is one of a handful remaining from the 1843 Linden Place residential subdivision and a fine, intact example of Greek Revival style with some Italianate features. It is one of only four Greek Revival-type homes left in a neighborhood that began developing in the 1840s, helping preserve a 19th-century sense of scale.","narrative":"Built in 1843-44 on land that was once part of a farm, this house at 53 Linden Street in Brookline was part of a new residential subdivision. The 1844 map shows John G. Faxon, a merchant with a lumber firm, as owner. By 1851 it had passed to Thomas Howe, a Boston merchant, whose estate kept it through 1913. The clapboard house shows Greek Revival influence in its pedimented gable front, ionic columns, paired pilasters and flushboarding, along with Italianate touches such as triple front windows, a round-arched gable window and brackets. Original granite walls and posts remain. Alterations include added bathroom windows in 1924, conversion to three families in 1949, removal of the barn in 1957 and smaller replacement windows on the first floor in 1961. It is one of only four Greek Revival-type houses left in the neighborhood, and it helps convey the scale of the area's 1840s development.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival, with Italianate characteristics","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Present use is residential; converted to three families in 1949.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:57.329384-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/80/7925/63792580/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/85003291.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85003291/1a9a48ff5b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85003291/1a9a48ff5b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BrooklineMA_53LindenStreet.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BrooklineMA_53LindenStreet.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792580","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_at_53_Linden_Street","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14715588"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/norfolk-county/house-at-53-linden-street-85003291/"}
