It is a clapboard residence on about 3,366 square feet.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house was one of the original dwellings of the Linden Place subdivision and a fine example of Greek Revival architecture. Its Egyptian-style porch columns with lotus or acanthus leaf capitals are matched by only one other house in Brookline. It has also remained relatively unaltered and well preserved, contributing to the streetscape.","narrative":"Built in 1843-44 by William Wellman, a Boston banker who worked on State Street, this Greek Revival house at 4 Perry Street in Brookline was among the first three houses erected after Linden Square was laid out on former Holden land. Until 1903 it faced Linden Place, when it was moved to make way for two apartment buildings and later converted to two families. Its front gable faces the street, with a side bay, flushboarding, a pedimented gable and elaborate pilasters. The porch columns are especially distinctive, with capitals carrying an Egyptian-style lotus leaf motif rather than the more common Doric form; only one other Brookline house, at 7 Holden Street, has similar columns. Surrounded by apartment houses and triple deckers, it remains one of the few older homes nearby that is relatively unaltered. Recent repairs and ongoing maintenance have left it well preserved, and it helps convey the scale of the 19th-century neighborhood.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Built by William Wellman (architect information not available)","architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Present use is residential; the form describes it as well preserved after recent column repair and ongoing maintenance.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:57.063296-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/78/7925/63792578/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/85003287.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85003287/24d89bb483-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85003287/24d89bb483-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BrooklineMA_HouseAt4PerryStreet.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BrooklineMA_HouseAt4PerryStreet.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792578","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_at_4_Perry_Street","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5914357"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/norfolk-county/house-at-4-perry-street-85003287/"}
