It meets National Register criterion C.","narrative":"Built in 1855-56 on Webster Place in Brookline, this two-story double house is six bays wide and fronted by a broad verandah. Deep eaves, tall first-floor windows, sidelights beside the doors and interior chimneys reflect the Greek Revival style, while the sawn porch supports follow the Italianate manner. The front under the porch is flushboarded and the rest is clad in narrow clapboards. It was built as rental property for George Stoddard, and a similar house at 30-32 Webster Place went to his brother-in-law, Albert L. Lincoln. Lincoln bought this house in 1868, and a tenant, Mrs. Ingersoll, lived here for many years. In the 1960s the Brookline Friendly Society acquired it for a family counseling center, altering the interior extensively, blocking the left-hand doorway and adding a rear fire escape in 1965. It is considered one of the few intact examples of the transitional Greek Revival/Italianate style and is unusual for its double-house plan.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival, with Italianate columns on the porch","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Used as a social services administration building (Brookline Friendly Society, a family counseling center) since the 1960s; interior extensively altered and a fire escape added in 1965.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:56.713307-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/41/7924/63792441/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/85003286.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85003286/116c1014b6-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85003286/116c1014b6-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BrooklineMA_HouseAt38_40WebsterPlace.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BrooklineMA_HouseAt38_40WebsterPlace.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792441","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_at_38%E2%80%9340_Webster_Place","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5914286"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/norfolk-county/house-at-38-40-webster-place-85003286/"}
