It is also tied to John Goddard, wagon master of the Continental Army, who stored munitions here and directed the wagon train that fortified Dorchester Heights in 1776. The form cites criteria A, B and C.","narrative":"Built in 1767 at 235 Goddard Avenue in Brookline, this two-story clapboard farmhouse has a square, compact form, a hipped roof with a large central chimney, a symmetrical facade and a pedimented entrance portico with Doric columns and sidelights. Inside, the panelling, doors and hardware are characteristic of the Revolutionary period. John Goddard and his wife Hannah Seaver Goddard built it after tearing down an earlier house on the family farm. Goddard served the town in several offices and was later appointed wagon master of the Continental Army. He hid munitions on the farm and took loads of powder to Concord in April 1775. In March 1776 he directed the wagon train that carried cannon and supplies to fortify Dorchester Heights, which led the British to leave Boston. The farm stayed in the Goddard family for more than 200 years. A long ell and the large barn have been demolished, but the house remains one of the few surviving farmhouses of its kind in Brookline and is in residential use.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"John Goddard (builder and original owner); architect information not available","architectural_style":"Georgian","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"Present use is residential; the barn and the long ell have been removed.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:57.190706-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/47/7923/63792347/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/85003270.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85003270/c4a534ad3d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85003270/c4a534ad3d-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BrooklineMA_JohnGoddardHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BrooklineMA_JohnGoddardHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792347","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Goddard_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6235570"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/norfolk-county/goddard-john-house-85003270/"}
