It combines Italianate and Gothic Revival elements.","why_significant":"The house was one of the earliest built in the 1843 Linden Place subdivision, Brookline's first such planned residential development, laid out by Davis, a former Mayor of Boston. It is also an unusual example of Gothic Revival/Italianate design and the only house of its kind in Brookline, with its octagonal cupola and large rear ell.","narrative":"This 2½-story clapboard house at 29 Linden Place in Brookline was built in 1844 for Thomas Aspinwall Davis, a jeweler turned politician who briefly served as Mayor of Boston and died in 1845. It was among the first houses in Linden Place, a subdivision Davis platted in 1843 on family land, the first such development sold in Brookline. Deed restrictions kept buildings thirty feet back from the streets and limited the lots to dwellings. The house has an octagonal cupola between two chimneys, a long rear ell, and Gothic Revival bargeboards and drip mouldings over the windows. Its original front gallery was probably removed when the house was moved in 1903 to make room for twelve new houses; it was also converted to two-family use then. Later owners included a notorious builder and a tobacco merchant. The house is considered the only one of its kind in Brookline.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate and Gothic Revival elements","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"Present use is two-family residential; the house was converted from single-family use in 1903 and now sits closely flanked by three-deckers.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:57.655442-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/56/7926/63792656/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/85003260.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85003260/c9a0a8645c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85003260/c9a0a8645c-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BrooklineMA_ThomasAspinwallDavisHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BrooklineMA_ThomasAspinwallDavisHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792656","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Aspinwall_Davis_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7787176"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/norfolk-county/davis-thomas-aspinwall-house-85003260/"}
