It was built by a member of one of Brookline's most prominent early families, the Coreys, for whom Corey Hill is named. It is also a rare stone Greek Revival-style homestead, one of fewer than a half dozen pre-1850 stone houses in Brookline.","narrative":"Standing at the corner of Washington Street and Downing Road in Brookline, this fieldstone house was built in 1843 by Deacon Timothy Corey. It is a 2.5-story building with a gable roof, exterior chimneys, lintel-type window heads and a simple front entrance, now sheltered by a covered porch altered around 1960. Its massing and details reflect Greek Revival influence, yet the fieldstone walls give it an appearance more typical of Pennsylvania than Massachusetts. Corey was the son of a Timothy Corey who moved from Weston to Brookline in the 1770s and bought much land nearby. The family farmed extensively in the area, and Corey Hill takes its name from them. The house replaced an older dwelling on the same site. Local lore says Corey chose stone despite neighbors who believed the world was ending, saying he would rather face the end from a stone house. It is one of fewer than six stone houses in Brookline built before 1850, and it still serves as a residence and doctor's office.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Built by Deacon Timothy Corey; architect information not available","architectural_style":"Stone vernacular interpretation of Greek Revival","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Present use is residential and a doctor's office; the front porch was altered around 1960.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:56.180434-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/45/7923/63792345/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/85003256.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85003256/ac2bed42dc-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85003256/ac2bed42dc-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BrooklineMA_TimothyCoreyHouseNumberTwo.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BrooklineMA_TimothyCoreyHouseNumberTwo.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792345","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timothy_Corey_House_No._2","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7807121"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/norfolk-county/corey-timothy-house-no-2-85003256/"}
