The congregation was organized in 1867 by Harry Cowan, who was born into slavery in 1810 and became a leading figure among North Carolina's black Baptists. The trustees bought the present lot in 1893. Under Rev. Fisher Robert Mason, pastor from 1902 to 1929, membership grew from 50 to 600. The sanctuary is a red brick Gothic Revival building with lancet stained glass windows donated as memorials. Brick veneer was probably applied in the late 1920s. The rear wing housed the Sunshine School, run by Mrs. Fannie Mason from 1920 to about 1928, which taught grades one through six at a time when schooling for Black children was limited. The church has remained a prominent congregation in Salisbury's Black community.","period_of_significance":"1900-","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Late Gothic Revival (American Gothic Revival)","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"Occupied, in religious use; condition marked excellent.
