Its complex of dam, raceways, water wheel and belting illustrates late nineteenth and early twentieth century water-power technology. Together with its blacksmith shop and residence it represents the small commercial and industrial enterprises that served a rural economy.","narrative":"On the Sawkill Creek at Milford, this complex centres on a grist mill whose original 1882 two-storey frame building was rebuilt after a fire and fitted with a 24 horsepower turbine. A 1904 water wheel by the Rowe brothers and a machine shop added c. 1908 extended the power system, and much of the turbine, shafting, elevator machinery and belt drives remain in place. The dam, mill pond and raceways that feed the wheel survive intact. Nearby stand a blacksmith shop of about 1860-1870 serving local farmers and a miller's house with late eighteenth-century origins. Milford was named for its mills, and this is the only one where the water power and milling equipment remain together. The site shows how small rural enterprises were powered and operated until the mid-twentieth century.","period_of_significance":"1882-1908","architect_builder":"Jervis Gordon, Alanson & John Rowe","architectural_style":null,"criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Restoration work was in progress at the time of nomination, with adaptive use planned for a grist mill, cider mill and shops.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:13:26.029479-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/85003163.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85003163/96cf6f5ffc-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85003163/96cf6f5ffc-1600.webp","licence":"CC0","author":"Ammodramus","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Jervis_Gordon_grist_mill_gears_and_wheels_2.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Ammodramus</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/deed.en\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Jervis_Gordon_grist_mill_gears_and_wheels_2.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"02000951","name":"Milford Historic District (Boundary Increase)","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/pennsylvania/milford-historic-district-boundary-increase-02000951/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71996559","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jervis_Gordon_Grist_Mill_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6185270"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/pike-county/gordon-jervis-grist-mill-historic-district-85003163/"}
