It now serves as a branch bank.","why_significant":"The house is argued to be the finest and most intact of Wrentham's few Italianate residences, with a square, three-bay, hip-roofed form unusual in southeastern Massachusetts. It is also associated with two prominent local business leaders, Francis Plimpton and Murray Winter. Its design was probably taken from a pattern book.","narrative":"Built in 1868 at 127 South Street in Wrentham, this two-story Italianate house was constructed for Francis N. Plimpton, a longtime director of the National Bank of Wrentham, town treasurer and noted gardener. Murray Winter, co-founder of the Winter Brothers Tap and Dye Factory, bought it in 1915, and his family kept it until 1981. The wood-frame house has a square plan, three bays across, a low hipped roof, a granite foundation and a rear ell. Its bracketed cornices, pedimented windows with medallions, and decorated entry porch show a full range of high-style Italianate detail, which is unusual in this part of southeastern Massachusetts, where most examples are five-bay and gable-roofed. The architect is unknown, and the design probably came from a pattern book. Rehabilitated as a bank branch, the building keeps its original site, exterior character and several interior features, including marble fireplaces and a carved staircase balustrade.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Rehabilitated and in use as the Wrentham Branch of the Foxboro Savings Bank, with the first floor serving as the bank and the second floor as offices; the interior was carefully altered for the change from residence to bank.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:57.833187-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/44/7962/63796244/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/85003071.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85003071/2c32a36d22-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85003071/2c32a36d22-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Plimpton-Winter_House,_Wrentham_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Plimpton-Winter_House,_Wrentham_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63796244","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plimpton%E2%80%93Winter_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7204978"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/norfolk-county/plimpton-winter-house-85003071/"}
