Pettigrew St. in Durham, North Carolina, built in 1916 as Durham Hosiery Mills No. 2; only its eastern portion survives and it has housed Service Printing Company since 1947.","why_significant":"It was one of the very few North Carolina textile mills to employ a black labor force in the early twentieth century, and it is tied to Julian S. Carr, founder of Durham Hosiery Mills. It later housed Service Printing Company, a branch of the black newspaper The Carolina Times, and is the only commercial survivor of the Hayti district after urban renewal.","narrative":"Located at 504 E. Pettigrew Street in Durham, this tall one-story brick building is the surviving eastern part of Durham Hosiery Mills No. 2, built in 1916. Pilastered walls, tall segmental arched windows, exposed curved rafter ends and a monitor roof mark it as an early twentieth-century textile mill. The mill began production in 1904 on the site with a black workforce, which made it one of very few North Carolina mills to do so. It was part of the company founded by Julian S. Carr. The mill closed in 1929 and later served as a tobacco warehouse. Service Printing Company, begun in 1932 as a branch of The Carolina Times, moved in during 1947. The newspaper joined it in 1958 until a 1979 fire destroyed the west end. Urban renewal cleared the surrounding Hayti neighborhood in the 1960s and 1970s, leaving this building and its printing business as the area's only commercial survivors.","period_of_significance":"1916","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":["A","B"],"status_note":"Occupied by Service Printing Company; condition listed as fair. The west end was destroyed by fire in 1979 and the ruins were removed.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:49.904993-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/87/7177/47717787/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/85003055.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85003055/03e10164a3-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85003055/03e10164a3-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mark_at_Durham_One_Apartments.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mark_at_Durham_One_Apartments.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47717787","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Durham_Hosiery_Mills_No._2%E2%80%93Service_Printing_Company_Building","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19461453"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/durham-county/durham-hosiery-mills-no-2-service-printing-company-building-85003055/"}
