Brookfield Center was bypassed by coal-era industrial and railroad growth, which helped preserve its rural 19th-century appearance.","narrative":"Brookfield Center is a village-center historic district in Trumbull County, Ohio, organized around a long, narrow green that separates the northbound and southbound lanes of State Route 7. Ten buildings line the green, mostly on its west side, and were built between 1830 and 1930. Five are Greek Revival, including former hotels and the 1831 Dr. Stewart house. Others include a brick commercial building, a vernacular Italianate-influenced house from 1852, an 1876 frame church, and a 1929 brick Methodist church combining Gothic and Tudor Revival styles. One recent antique shop does not contribute. The green was deeded by landowner Samuel Hinckley in 1823 and reflects New England planning ideas brought to the Western Reserve. It is one of only two rectangular greens in Trumbull County. When coal mining and railroads fueled growth elsewhere in the township, the original center was bypassed, which helped preserve its rural nineteenth-century character.","period_of_significance":"1830-1930","architect_builder":"various","architectural_style":"Greek Revival, with vernacular Italianate-influenced buildings, Federal influences, and a Gothic/Tudor Revival church","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Buildings are largely well preserved and in use as residences, apartments, a funeral home, a commercial studio, and churches; one recent antique shop building is non-contributing.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:14.289462-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/85002922.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71991679","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":null},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/trumbull-county/brookfield-center-historic-district-85002922/"}
