Cohen Company, makers of men's neckwear. It is in the Romanesque Revival style.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is a distinctive, representative example of Romanesque Revival industrial architecture in the Inner Loop area. It is also tied to the growth of Rochester's garment industry. It is one of the few surviving examples of a once-common industrial building type.","narrative":"Built in 1889 at 216 Andrews Street in Rochester, this five-story brick building was constructed for the H.C. Cohen Company, a maker and importer of men's neckwear and silk ties. Cohen started his business in 1873 and placed the new building on the northern edge of the city's garment district, near the railroad, the Erie Canal and Main Street. The building held a showroom, warehouse, offices and manufacturing space. Only the facade carries Romanesque Revival detail: broad rock-faced arches on the first floor, Medina sandstone impost blocks, corbelled brick, pilasters and a fifth-floor arcade of arched windows. The interior is plain mill construction with heavy timbers and cast-iron columns. The company later became Superba Cravats and operated here until 1983, outlasting every other clothing manufacturer in the district. It is one of few surviving examples of its type on Andrews Street. Around 1955 a two-story addition was built, and in 1985 the building was converted to residential use.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Romanesque Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition rated excellent; converted to residential use in 1985 with the first two floors' windows reconstructed.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.240413-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/85002853.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85002853/d1ead913c2-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85002853/d1ead913c2-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Tim Pierce","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Andrews_Building_Rochester_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Tim Pierce</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Andrews_Building_Rochester_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75313642","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H._C._Cohen_Company_Building%E2%80%93Andrews_Building","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5628107"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/monroe-county/cohen-h-c-company-building-andrews-building-85002853/"}
