Holland. Its design is a modest adaptation of the Second Empire style, with a concave mansard roof, multicolored slate in star and diamond patterns, bracketed cornices, hood-moulded windows and a front porch with scrollsawn arches. The original wrought-iron fence and bevelled-glass French doors survive. Additions were made between 1929 and 1940, and the interior was divided into six apartments in 1965. Holland was a mayor of Suffolk, Commonwealth's Attorney, bank president, Virginia state senator and member of the U.S. House of Representatives. The house was one of four large residences built around 1885 in the Joyner's Park area, and it is one of only two late-19th century houses left in Suffolk of similar design and detail. The Elks Lodge owned it from 1940, and it hosted servicemen during World War II.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Modest adaptation of Second Empire style, with Italianate bracketing","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied and in use as a six-unit apartment house since a 1965 conversion; described as in excellent condition and largely unaltered on the exterior.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:00.992507-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/75/6838/41683875/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/85002765.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85002765/2d8fe0291e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85002765/2d8fe0291e-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Capt1922","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Building_at_216_Bank_St._Suffolk_VA_21Sep2014.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Capt1922</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Building_at_216_Bank_St._Suffolk_VA_21Sep2014.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"87000631","name":"Suffolk Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/suffolk-historic-district-87000631/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41683875","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Building_at_216_Bank_Street","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16848815"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/suffolk/building-at-216-bank-street-85002765/"}
