It stands on a corner lot at the edge of the Town Center and now serves as a funeral home.","why_significant":"The house is presented as an exceptionally handsome example of the late 19th century mansions that once lined Massachusetts Avenue in North Cambridge and Arlington. It retains most of its original interior and exterior detail. It also reflects the growing sophistication and suburbanization of Arlington's residents and is tied to Henry Swan, a local merchant and town official.","narrative":"Built in 1888 at 418 Massachusetts Avenue in Arlington, this Queen Anne/Shingle Style house was the home of Henry Swan, a member of an old Arlington family. Swan sold poultry and wild game at Faneuil Hall Market in Boston and served the town as a selectman and school committee member. The house has an open veranda along the front and side, a polygonal corner tower, and lion-headed console supports beneath the second story on the east side. Inside, beveled and stained glass windows, Italian tile fireplaces, and mahogany paneled doors and woodwork remain in excellent condition. It has been used as a funeral home since at least 1916, and a single-story stucco addition was added on the west side in the early 1930s. It was listed as a well-preserved example of the late 19th century mansions along Massachusetts Avenue and as a marker of Arlington's suburban growth. It sat close to public transportation routes.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect unknown; built by Henry Swan (original owner)","architectural_style":"Queen Anne/Shingle Style","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Used as a funeral home since as early as 1916; original detail largely preserved, with a single-story stucco addition from the early 1930s.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:56.53393-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/14/7912/63791214/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/85002688.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85002688/8d367e927c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85002688/8d367e927c-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Daderot","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Henry_Swan_House,_ArlingtonMA_-_IMG_2724.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Daderot</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Henry_Swan_House,_ArlingtonMA_-_IMG_2724.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"85002691","name":"Arlington Center Historic District (Boundary Increase)","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/massachusetts/arlington-center-historic-district-boundary-increase-85002691/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791214","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Swan_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5728891"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/swan-henry-house-85002688/"}
