It retains integrity of design, material, feeling, workmanship and association with a major transportation route, meeting Criterion A.","narrative":"A small carved stone marks the junction of Appleton Street and Paul Revere Road in Arlington, Massachusetts. Dating to about 1790, the milestone measures roughly 40 by 42 inches and is 8 inches thick. A carved \"8\" at its center shows the distance to Boston. It is the only milestone still standing in Arlington, where several once marked mileage along the main routes through town. In the 18th and early 19th centuries Appleton Street was part of a major route west from Boston. A short extension of what is now Massachusetts Avenue in 1811 bypassed both the street and its stone. Roadway changes in 1940 required moving the marker slightly to its present spot on a triangle of grass, and the Arlington Historical Society helped see it preserved. The stone is listed for its association with a major transportation route and for retaining its original design, material and workmanship. It remains in excellent condition under town ownership.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Condition is stated as excellent; it was moved slightly to its present position in 1940 during roadway changes.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:56.619562-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/17/7923/63792317/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/85002683.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85002683/ba3cd32b1c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85002683/ba3cd32b1c-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Historic American Buildings Survey","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ArlingtonMAMilestoneBW.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Historic American Buildings Survey</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ArlingtonMAMilestoneBW.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792317","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milestone_(Arlington,_Massachusetts)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6851602"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/milestone-85002683/"}
