It combines Italianate details with the five-bay, center-entrance massing of the Georgian tradition. It is also described as the oldest extant dwelling in Huntington Bay, and it retains a high degree of architectural integrity.","narrative":"High Lindens, the John P. Kane Mansion, is a three-story clapboard house built around 1850 on a steep, wooded 1.7-acre hillside at 37 Kanes Lane in Huntington Bay. It has a flat roof, deep eaves on large scrollsawn brackets, paired chimneys, and a five-bay facade with a molded entrance surround, fluted pilasters, sidelights and a transom. In the early twentieth century a straight porch with Ionic columns replaced the original bowed porch, and one-story wings with swag-and-urn parapets were added to each side. The house is regarded as the oldest surviving dwelling in Huntington Bay, an area that was not developed until the late nineteenth century. It is considered a distinctive local example of Italianate design set within a traditional Georgian layout. Records show it owned by John P. Kane, a wealthy businessman, in 1909. The property has no surviving outbuildings, is surrounded by mid-twentieth century homes, and is still used as a residence.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":[],"status_note":"Used as a residence, in good condition, with no known threats; the interior is accessible by appointment only.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.122193-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/85002580.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85002580/604214669d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85002580/604214669d-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Peggydowling","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_P._Kane_Mansion,_%22High_Lindens%22,_37_Kanes_Lane_Huntington_Bay.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Peggydowling</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_P._Kane_Mansion,_%22High_Lindens%22,_37_Kanes_Lane_Huntington_Bay.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75314777","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_P._Kane_Mansion","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6251617"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/suffolk-county/kane-john-p-mansion-85002580/"}
