It includes settlement-period dwellings with modified Federal and Greek Revival details, a Victorian-era house, and the Gold Coast estate Wawapek, designed by Grosvenor Atterbury for Robert W. DeForest.","narrative":"Shore Road is a narrow, winding street on the east side of Cold Spring Harbor, where a cluster of houses sits at the foot of a wooded bluff. The district covers 36 acres and holds eighteen contributing buildings dating from about 1790 to 1900, most from the early nineteenth century. The oldest is the Henry Titus farmstead, with its mid-nineteenth-century outbuildings. Several modest dwellings built by farmers and sailors during the whaling era show simple massing with Federal and Greek Revival touches, and many were enlarged when the village became a summer resort. The John Dole House of about 1875 blends symmetrical local tradition with Victorian ornament. Wawapek, built from 1898 to 1900 for businessman and civic leader Robert W. DeForest and designed by Grosvenor Atterbury, represents the shift toward affluent estates on Long Island's Gold Coast. Its cobblestone, brick and wood construction recalls Adirondack lodges. Together the buildings trace the village's settlement and change over more than a century.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Grosvenor Atterbury (architect of Wawapek, built for Robert Weeks DeForest)","architectural_style":"Settlement-period vernacular with modified Federal and Greek Revival details; Victorian picturesque; Shingle style and Adirondack lodge-inspired estate architecture","criteria":[],"status_note":null,"vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.219769-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/85002578.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85002578/118d468f07-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85002578/118d468f07-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Muncharelli","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Shore_Road_Historic_District.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Muncharelli</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Shore_Road_Historic_District.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75314887","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shore_Road_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7501319"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/suffolk-county/shore-road-historic-district-85002578/"}
