The south wing was built c. 1830 and the larger main block c. 1855 for Daniel Smith.","why_significant":"The house is presented as an intact, representative example of late settlement period architecture in the town of Huntington. It shows the local practice of adding a larger, more stylish house to a smaller one that becomes a wing. It also has ties to the Wood family's milling ventures along the harbor.","narrative":"Set on a one and one-half acre wooded lot along West Shore Road, on the west bank of Huntington Harbor, this house combines two buildings from different decades. The earlier dwelling, built around 1830, is a one and one-half story clapboard house with heavy timber framing and almost no decoration. It now serves as the south wing. About 1855, Daniel Smith added a two and one-half story, three-bay main block with restrained Greek Revival details, including a projecting cornice with returns and a classical entrance surround with sidelights. Smith was an Englishman brought to the country by the locally prominent Wood family to help run their tide mill, and he bought John Wood's mill and the original house in 1854. The property is valued as an intact example of the local habit of attaching a grander residence to a smaller older one. A porch added in the early twentieth century and a rear entrance from about 1970 are the main changes.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival (restrained details on the main block); local vernacular form in the south wing","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in excellent condition and still used as a residence; the inventory notes no known threats and says the interior is accessible by appointment only.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:44.943485-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/85002576.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85002576/3b702b35ec-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85002576/3b702b35ec-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"DanTD","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Daniel_Smith_House;_117_West_Shore_Road,_Huntington,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">DanTD</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Daniel_Smith_House;_117_West_Shore_Road,_Huntington,_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75314771","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Smith_House_(Huntington,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5218795"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/suffolk-county/smith-daniel-house-85002576/"}
