Silas Sammis is named as the builder.","why_significant":"The house is presented as an intact, representative example of settlement period residential architecture in Huntington. It belongs to a small group of eighteenth-century dwellings greatly enlarged in the early nineteenth century with restrained Greek Revival details. It is also tied to the locally prominent Sammis family, which held the house until 1928.","narrative":"Located on 1.4 acres along West Neck Road in Huntington, this house combines two building campaigns. The smaller east wing, a five-bay, one-and-one-half-story shingled structure, dates to about 1730 and began as a one-room dwelling with a shed-roof addition. A larger three-bay shingled section followed around 1800, with a side entrance, a molded surround with pilasters and sidelights, a plain entablature, frieze windows and a massive off-center chimney. Inside, original features include an eight-foot-wide early eighteenth-century fireplace, a Dutch door and a paneled door. Dormers were added to the wing in the early twentieth century. A barn to the south, heavily remodelled as a garage, no longer contributes to the property. The house is valued as an intact example of settlement-period architecture in Huntington, with timber framing, shingle sheathing and minimal decoration in the early wing. It also reflects the Sammis family, early Huntington settlers who held the house until 1928.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect unknown; builder Silas Sammis","architectural_style":"Settlement period architecture with modified Greek Revival details","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as in good condition and still used as a residence; a barn converted to a garage is a non-contributing feature.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.102481-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/85002573.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85002573/ed6be0fa14-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85002573/ed6be0fa14-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":null,"credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Silas_Sammis_House,_West_Neck_Avenue_and_Sammis_Road,_Huntington,_Suffolk_County,_NY_HABS_NY,52-HUNTO.V,1-1.tif\" rel=\"noopener\">Unknown author</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Silas_Sammis_House,_West_Neck_Avenue_and_Sammis_Road,_Huntington,_Suffolk_County,_NY_HABS_NY,52-HUNTO.V,1-1.tif"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75314939","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silas_Sammis_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7514218"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/suffolk-county/sammis-silas-house-85002573/"}
