It is also described as one of the oldest, most intact properties tied to the settlement and early growth of Half Hollow Hills. It has stayed relatively unaltered and keeps its original plan and detailing.","narrative":"Known locally as \"Five Gates,\" this house at 627 Half Hollow Road in Huntington was built in 1732 by John Rogers on 257 acres originally granted to him in 1706 by Queen Anne of England. The name comes from five gates that once led to grazing areas on the property. The dwelling is a one and one-half story timber-framed house with dark weathered shingles, a saltbox profile, a gabled roof and a central chimney. Its five-bay facade has six-over-six sash windows, and the central entrance has a restrained Federal style cornice, slender pilasters and corner blocks. A square water tower with a flared base is attached at the rear. Inside, the original central hall plan, moldings, fireplaces, corner cupboards and period hardware survive. Within Huntington, it stands out for its size, symmetrical facade and well-crafted details, and it is one of the oldest and most intact properties from the early settlement of the Half Hollow Hills area.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"John Rogers (builder)","architectural_style":"Early settlement period (saltbox form) with a restrained Federal style entrance","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition listed as excellent; use remains a residence, with the original site intact and no known threats.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:46.168371-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/85002572.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85002572/595c8ea6de-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85002572/595c8ea6de-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"DanTD","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_Rogers_House;_Half_Hollow_Hills,_New_York.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">DanTD</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_Rogers_House;_Half_Hollow_Hills,_New_York.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75314937","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Rogers_House_(Huntington,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6255445"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/suffolk-county/rogers-john-house-85002572/"}
