Prime, with stucco walls and a cupola.","why_significant":"It is Huntington's only example of the mid-nineteenth century octagon style promoted by Orson S. Fowler, and one of two known in Suffolk County. It is also tied to Ezra C. Prime, a prosperous thimble manufacturer from a locally prominent family. It remains largely unaltered and is one of two surviving structures linked to the town's nineteenth-century industrial development.","narrative":"Built around 1859 at 41 Prime Avenue in Huntington, this two-story octagonal house has stucco walls, a nearly flat hipped roof, a bracketed and denticulated cornice, and a square cupola with ventilator panels. Paired six-over-six windows have heavily molded surrounds and bracket-supported sills. The first floor was built of Rosendale cement and gravel dug from the cellar, the second floor is stuccoed brick, and the walls are 18 inches thick. It loosely follows a design shown in Orson S. Fowler's book on octagon houses, which promoted the shape as economical and functional. It is the only octagon house in the town of Huntington and one of two known in Suffolk County. Ezra C. Prime, a thimble manufacturer, had it built; his factory once stood where Heckscher Park is now. The original porch was replaced and a garage was attached in the 1950s, but the interior keeps its finishes, trim, flooring and plan.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Octagon style","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition listed as excellent; still used as a residence, with the original porch removed and a modern garage wing added in the 1950s.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.134955-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/85002569.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85002569/a04262ebe2-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85002569/a04262ebe2-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"DanTD","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Prime_Octagon_House;_Huntington_NY.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">DanTD</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Prime_Octagon_House;_Huntington_NY.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75314961","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prime%E2%80%93Octagon_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14707212"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/suffolk-county/prime-octagon-house-85002569/"}
