It holds the multiple resource area's largest, most intact collection of middle-class Victorian-era dwellings. It also preserves four rare settlement period houses and Elm Cottage, an early Gothic Revival example.","narrative":"West Neck Road in Huntington village, Suffolk County, is lined with a cohesive group of twenty-three contributing houses built between about 1750 and about 1910, on small lots with a uniform setback and mature trees. Four early dwellings, the Weeks, Ketchum, Douglas Conklin and Conklin houses, recall the area's farming past through timber framing, simple forms and restrained Federal detailing. Elm Cottage, built about 1850, is one of few Gothic Revival buildings in the surrounding resource area, with board and batten siding and scroll-sawn bargeboards; it was home to the Woolsey family, owners of a nearby hat factory. Most of the remaining houses date from 1860 to 1900, when the road became a middle-class neighborhood for merchants and businessmen working in the adjacent commercial core. They show asymmetrical massing, bay windows, wrap-around porches and abundant sawn and turned woodwork. The district was listed as one of the few relatively unaltered streetscapes surviving from Huntington's period of rapid late nineteenth century growth.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Settlement period vernacular and Federal, Gothic Revival, and late Victorian eclectic/picturesque (including Stick style details)","criteria":[],"status_note":"The district is described as relatively intact, with a uniform setback and mature trees; it also contains three modern non-contributing houses.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.968661-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/85002567.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85002567/a6fe6cfe3e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85002567/a6fe6cfe3e-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Muncharelli","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:West_Neck_Road_Historic_District.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Muncharelli</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:West_Neck_Road_Historic_District.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75314893","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Neck_Road_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7986054"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/suffolk-county/west-neck-road-historic-district-85002567/"}
