It shows the long persistence of a local vernacular building tradition with minimal decoration into the mid-nineteenth century. It retains a high degree of architectural integrity and marks the end of the area's local settlement period building tradition.","narrative":"Set on a one-acre plot along West Main Street, west of Huntington's central business district, this house was built around 1853 for Harry Wood, a member of the locally prominent Wood family. It is a two and one-half story, five-bay dwelling with a center entrance, gable roof and clapboard siding. Interior end chimneys, gable-end windows and cornice returns shape the roofline, and the six-over-six double-hung windows have simple flush wooden trim. The central doorway has a transom, sidelights, a pent roof and a balustraded porch. The house was listed as a representative example of late settlement period architecture in the village. Its small-pane windows, plain detailing and symmetrical plan show how Huntington's conservative building practices kept a local vernacular tradition alive well into the mid-1800s. Retaining a high degree of integrity, it recalls the town's mid-nineteenth century growth. The grounds of the Huntington Country Club border the property to the north and west, and it has remained a residence.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect unknown; builder unknown, built for Harry Wood","architectural_style":"Late settlement period vernacular","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in excellent condition on its original site; still used as a residence, with a modern garage and shed that do not contribute.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.027237-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/85002553.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85002553/fbe58a26f0-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85002553/fbe58a26f0-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"DanTD","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Harry_Wood_House;_481_NY_25A,_Huntington.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">DanTD</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Harry_Wood_House;_481_NY_25A,_Huntington.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75314933","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Wood_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14706327"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/suffolk-county/wood-harry-house-85002553/"}
