It represents upper-income residential architecture in the Huntington area and housed locally prominent businessmen and civic leaders. Its largely intact condition and harborside setting recall the town's affluent early twentieth century lifestyle.","narrative":"Perched on a high hill above Huntington Harbor, this two-acre property at Browns Road and Cedar Valley Lane holds a large Colonial Revival residence built in 1900. The seven-bay, two-story clapboard house has a T-shaped plan and a hipped roof with gabled dormers. A colossal pedimented portico on fluted Doric columns dominates the east facade, which also has a lunette window, a denticulated raking cornice and a tripartite French window with a wrought-iron balcony. A porch on paired Doric columns wraps the south side, and a rear wing includes a porte-cochère. The architect and builder are unknown. Early in the twentieth century it was the home of a Mr. Gilsey, about whom little is recorded, and later of locally prominent businessmen and civic leaders. It was listed because it is an outstanding, largely intact example of fashionable turn-of-the-century residential design, and a reminder of the affluent lifestyle of Huntington in that era. It remains a residence, surrounded by an open, tree-shaded lawn.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Colonial Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in excellent condition, still used as a residence, on its original site, with no known threats; interior accessible by appointment only.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:44.692737-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/85002525.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85002525/dba116afec-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85002525/dba116afec-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Muncharelli","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gilsey_facing_north.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Muncharelli</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gilsey_facing_north.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75314753","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gilsey_Mansion","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5562594"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/suffolk-county/gilsey-mansion-85002525/"}
