It sits on a two and one-half acre wooded lot with three late nineteenth century farm outbuildings.","why_significant":"The house is argued to be a representative example of late settlement period architecture in Huntington, with a typical three-bay side-entrance plan and little decorative detail. Its late nineteenth century additions are compatible with the original design. The surviving shed, barn and wellhouse are rare examples of their type in densely developed Huntington, and the wooded site keeps an historic rural setting.","narrative":"This house at 130 Old Country Road in the Melville area of Huntington was built around 1830 for John Everit. It is a two and one-half story, three-bay shingled dwelling with a side-hall plan, a molded entrance surround, a shed-roofed porch on scroll-sawn columns, and six-over-six windows with louvered shutters. A one and one-half story east wing was added about 1870, and a rear wing about 1900. The two and one-half acre wooded lot also holds a gable-roofed barn, an attached shed and a wellhouse, all from the late nineteenth century. The property matters because it represents Huntington's settlement period homes, which often had a plain three-bay plan with little ornament. Its later additions fit the original design and materials. The surviving farm buildings show continued agricultural use and are rare in a heavily developed town, and together with the wooded setting they preserve a sense of the town's rural past.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect unknown; built for John Everit (builder unknown)","architectural_style":"Late settlement period architecture (three-bay, side-hall plan dwelling)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Still used as a residence; condition listed as excellent on the inventory form.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.767753-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/85002522.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85002522/e0e3352d1e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85002522/e0e3352d1e-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"DanTD","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_Everit_House;_Melville,_New_York-1.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">DanTD</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_Everit_House;_Melville,_New_York-1.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75314917","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Everit_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6232071"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/suffolk-county/everit-john-house-85002522/"}
