It was built in 1867 for Cornelius Delamater.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is one of the most fully developed examples of Second Empire residential architecture in the town of Huntington and the only one of its type in Asharoken. It is also one of the oldest surviving dwellings in Asharoken, built for an iron industrialist whose foundry produced parts for the USS Monitor.","narrative":"Built in 1867 for Cornelius Delamater, this two-and-one-half story clapboard house sits on a one-acre waterfront lot at the south end of Bevin Lane in Asharoken. It has a shingled mansard roof with a wood balustrade and segmentally arched dormers, a modillioned cornice, two-story bay windows, and a one-story porch with turned posts that wraps around the house. A mansard-roofed wing extends from the rear. Inside, the original floor plan, moldings, and door and window surrounds remain largely intact. The house is regarded as one of the most fully developed Second Empire residences in Huntington and the only one of its kind in Asharoken. Delamater made his fortune in the iron industry, owning a Brooklyn foundry that produced boilers, armor plate, and gun turrets for the USS Monitor. The house was once the center of a large estate that has since been subdivided. In the 1940s, the French author Antoine de St. Exupery lived here and wrote Le Petit Prince.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect and builder unknown; built for Cornelius Delamater","architectural_style":"Second Empire","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition is listed as good, with the interior relatively unaltered. The house is still used as a residence and is privately owned. A glass-enclosed porch was added in 1980, and a modern garage stands on the lot.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:44.717069-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/85002514.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85002514/fa204f6a83-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85002514/fa204f6a83-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Hixguy1","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BevinBack.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Hixguy1</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BevinBack.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75314903","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delamater-Bevin_Mansion","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5253099"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/suffolk-county/delamater-bevin-mansion-85002514/"}
