It is also tied to the locally prominent Conklin family, among the first to settle in the town. The farm outbuildings reflect the property's continued agricultural use in the early nineteenth century.","narrative":"Built around 1750 by David Conklin, this two-and-one-half-story, three-bay house at 2 High Street in Huntington began as the center of a large farm. Its original section has a side-entrance plan, shingle siding, interior end chimneys and twelve-over-twelve windows. A one-and-one-half-story west wing was added about 1810, along with sidelights and a shed-roofed porch at the main entrance. In the 1920s a large southwest wing was built, and a one-story rear wing followed in the 1950s. Despite these additions, the early dwelling keeps its historic appearance. A privy and a lattice-sided well house, both from the early nineteenth century, survive on the lot and recall its farming past. The house is valued as a relatively unaltered example of settlement-period building in Huntington and for its link to the Conklin family, among the town's earliest settlers. It now serves as the Huntington Historical Society's archives and museum.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect: Unknown; Builder: David Conklin","architectural_style":"Settlement period architecture (three-bay side-hall entrance house)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Owned by the Huntington Historical Society and used as archives/museum; condition listed as excellent, interior open by appointment only.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.253951-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/85002513.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85002513/2f6e668d2c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85002513/2f6e668d2c-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Muncharelli","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:David_Conklin_House_and_Barn.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Muncharelli</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:David_Conklin_House_and_Barn.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75314849","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Conklin_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5232506"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/suffolk-county/conklin-david-house-85002513/"}
