It was built in 1913 to designs by Julian Peabody.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the library is the most distinguished early twentieth century civic building in the small village of Cold Spring Harbor. It is a locally significant, virtually unaltered example of Neoclassical design by a renowned New York City architect. Its construction also reflects the village's change from a seasonal summer resort into a year-round residential community.","narrative":"Built in 1913 at the corner of Shore Road and Main Street, the Cold Spring Harbor Library is a small brick civic building on a prominent landscaped lot at the western edge of the village's business district. It has one story, five bays, a hipped roof, a modillioned cornice and an octagonal cupola. The central entrance has a round-arched transom, double doors and a pedimented portico on tapered Doric columns, with a clockface above. Windows are twelve-over-twelve sash with marble lintels and sills. New York City architect Julian Peabody designed it in the Neoclassical style, and Edward Holmes built it. The library is regarded as the village's most distinguished early twentieth century civic building and has survived virtually unaltered. Its construction marks Cold Spring Harbor's shift from a seasonal summer resort to a year-round residential community. A flagpole and a rock with a commemorative plaque remain from the original setting, and a waterside town park lies behind the property.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect Julian Peabody; builder Edward Holmes","architectural_style":"Neoclassical","criteria":[],"status_note":"Still in use as a library; condition listed as good, with no known threats and the original site retained.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:46.246976-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/85002509.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85002509/d408f7d43d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85002509/d408f7d43d-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Joe Mabel (on Flickr as Joe Mabel from Seattle, US)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cold_Spring_Harbor_Library_02_(9353981331)_(2).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Joe Mabel (on Flickr as Joe Mabel from Seattle, US)</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cold_Spring_Harbor_Library_02_(9353981331)_(2).jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"85002578","name":"Shore Road Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/shore-road-historic-district-85002578/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75314869","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cold_Spring_Harbor_Library","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5142359"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/suffolk-county/cold-spring-harbor-library-85002509/"}
