The one-and-one-half story south wing dates from about 1700 and the main dwelling from about 1740.","why_significant":"The house is presented as an outstanding, well-preserved example of settlement period architecture in Huntington. Its second-story overhang, or jetty, is unusual on Long Island and suggests a direct link to New England building practices. It is one of few surviving early eighteenth century properties in the town and one of the few historic properties left in South Huntington. Its interior also retains fine craftsmanship.","narrative":"Set close to Melville Road in Huntington Station, this wood-shingled house began as a one-and-one-half story wing built around 1700. A five-bay, two-and-one-half story main block was added around 1740. It has a rubblestone foundation, a massive central chimney, a lean-to rear profile and a center entrance with a six-light transom. Its most distinctive feature is a second-story overhang, or jetty, a seventeenth-century New England practice that is rare on Long Island. The design reflects settlement period building on Long Island, with simple form, local natural materials and little decoration. Inside, the original floor plan, fireplaces, moldings, beamed ceilings, panelled woodwork and period hardware survive. The house was recorded by the Historic American Buildings Survey. Melville Road is now lined with modern housing developments, and this dwelling is one of the few unaltered historic homes left in South Huntington. Later owners included Ezra Carll in the nineteenth century, and a modern garage on the lot does not contribute to the property's historic character.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Settlement period architecture with New England influence (salt-box profile, second-story jetty)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Interior retains its original floor plan, fireplaces, moldings, beamed ceilings, panelled woodwork and period hardware.
