It was very large and finely detailed for the new port settlement and reflects the prosperity of its original owner, the town's first banker. Its architectural integrity is described as exceptional.","narrative":"Built around 1820 by Otis Starkey, this two-story gabled house sits on a one-acre lot at Point and Joseph Streets in the village of Cape Vincent. Its west facade is its most distinctive feature: flush horizontal siding set within a blind arcade of four Doric pilasters joined by elliptical arches, under a shallow cornice with modillions. A lower rear wing, likely added early in the nineteenth century, has a screened porch with an arched roof echoing the facade. A late nineteenth century carriage house stands in the southeast corner of the lot. Inside, the original floor boards, doors, hardware and surrounds survive. The house was large and finely detailed for a young settlement that was growing as a port. Starkey was a merchant, the first banker in Cape Vincent, village president, town supervisor and a donor of land for St. John's Episcopal Church. Dr. Thomas Mason later lived and practiced medicine there for twenty-five years.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect unknown; builder Otis Starkey","architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":[],"status_note":"Residential use; condition rated good; no threats known.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.73428-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/85002478.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85002478/1908b5f696-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85002478/1908b5f696-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Steven Hamsness","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Otis_Starkey_House_(South).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Steven Hamsness</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Otis_Starkey_House_(South).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75313142","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Otis_Starkey_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7108830"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/jefferson-county/starkey-otis-house-85002478/"}
