It is also tied to the French immigrant families who influenced Cape Vincent's early development. Its cemetery contributes to the property's historic character.","narrative":"St. Vincent of Paul Catholic Church stands at Lake and Kanady Streets in the village of Cape Vincent. Built in 1858 of well-dressed, regularly coursed limestone, it is a Gothic Revival building with a one-story main block, pointed-arched windows and a three-stage tower with a recessed pointed-arch entry and an octagonal cupola holding the bell. Inside, the original pressed-tin cove ceiling, oak pews, a carved wooden altar and stained-glass windows installed between about 1877 and 1883 survive. A limestone wing was added in 1965 using blocks from a local residence. The church is the only limestone church in the town and reflects the region's masonry tradition. It is also linked to French immigrant families, including the Golers, du Forts, Grappottes and Peugnets, whose names appear on monuments in the parish cemetery behind the church. The congregation continues to use the building for worship.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Gothic Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Still in use as a religious institution; condition described as good, with a non-historic side wing added in 1965.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.054853-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/85002477.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85002477/106e2e4846-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85002477/106e2e4846-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Steven Hamsness","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:St_Vincent_of_Paul_Catholic_Church._Front.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Steven Hamsness</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:St_Vincent_of_Paul_Catholic_Church._Front.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75313148","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Vincent_of_Paul_Catholic_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7592121"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/jefferson-county/st-vincent-of-paul-catholic-church-85002477/"}
